Our chapter had a successful fundraiser selling Klean Kanteen metal straws with hot chocolate or warm apple cider while our fellow SHPE chapter was selling engineering sweaters to keep us warm for the season. This will help us support our chapter to achieve our goals to encourage young girls to gain an interest in engineering!
Our chapter is doing our annual Jamba Juice Fundraiser to raise money to help members go to the annual SWE conference and for our chapter to thrive so we can encourage young girls to engineering. We'll be selling Buy One Get One Free redeemable for six times card for $10. If interested feel free to email us at swecsuchico@gmail.com to purchase.
Our hearts go out to all the members of our local community due to the recent events that have transpired. These events are even more saddening given that we are entering the Holiday Season. We want to help! So we've started a Christmas Stocking Drive to help alleviate parent's stress of Christmas Morning.
This drive is starting now and will go to the middle of finals week, which is when all the stockings will be delivered to parents/organizations. This is styled after the Samaritans Purse Operation Christmas Child, only instead of shoe boxes we are stuffing stockings. If you want to get involved buy a Christmas Santa-styled Stocking and fill it with candy, gum, small toys, and accessories, (it doesn't need to be expensive, dollar store or walmart items work great) anything that you think a child would enjoy and like to open come Christmas Morning. Drop off location is TBA. (NOTE: Please no violence related items) Please check our social media accounts for updates. If you would like to help but don't want to put together a stocking, we are also accepting item donations (that we will then put in stockings) or there is a go fund me page set up and the money we receive will go towards buying the items. Need help thinking of Items, here are some ideas: Candy (ie m&ms, herseys, skittles, etc) Gum, toy cars, stuffed animals, dolls, yo-yos, jump ropes, inflatable ball, hacky sacks, kaleidoscopes, little games/puzzles, cute hair ties, nail polish, fun socks/gloves, mints, coloring books and crayons, chalk, etc One important thing to remember through this Holiday Season, is it doesn't matter how you help, just help! When out and shopping buy a couple of extra canned goods, grab friends and go caroling at your local homeless shelter/retirement home, if mom's updating towels for the holidays think about donating your towels to the local animal shelters or even donate an extra bag of dog/cat food. Everything helps!!! Imagineer Day 2018 was a success! Over 240 students, k-8th grade, came to the Chico State Engineering Department on March 10th to participate, learn, and celebrate STEM related subjects. Many of the talented CSU Chico Engineering students volunteered their time and knowledge to help spread their love of their major to the future generation. Labs included an Egg Drop Challenge, Dancing Robots, and Giant Bubbles. This event wouldn't have been possible without all of our amazing sponsors, and other campus clubs that helped put on labs, including: Tau Beta Pi, FSAE, Society of Physics Students, SME, ASCE, and our special guest lab from Inspire. This was SWE's 6th annual Imagineer Day, each year features a different Disney theme, unique labs, and fun for all grades k-8th. If you/your child enjoyed this year, or if you didn't get a chance to attend this year, stay tuned for more information in the future for next year's date and theme. We are so excited to announce that our March Spotlight Student Of the Month is Oliver Reed! Oliver is a Chico native and has many accomplishments not just in engineering but in the arts, technology, and business too. He enjoys staying busy in college and in the community. Oliver is involved
with ACME, AIME, ASME, and SWE at Chico State. He has also volunteered in Imagineer Days, performed in many theater events and plays, and even ran his own ice cream shop. Oliver is a graduating senior in the Mechatronic Engineering program, has interviewed with many companies, and is excited to work in his field. ![]() It is our pleasure to announce that our Section President, and Region A Collegiate Senator, Shelby Freese was awarded the Region A Outstanding Collegiate Leader Award this past weekend at WELocal Phoenix, in Phoenix, Arizona. Shelby was granted this award based upon her “demonstrated outstanding technical performance, dedication to SWE, and her commitment to her community”. Shelby will stand as the last-ever recipient of this award, due to the fact that Regions within Society of Women Engineers will dissolve after June 1st of 2018. Shelby is also the 3rd person to receive this award from Chico State in the last 3 years; as her predecessors where Erin Baumgartner (2016 Award Recipient), and Kylee Davis (2017 Award Recipient). In addition to receiving this award, Shelby was also a Speaker at this conference. Not only was she a speaker, but she was the only Collegiate Speaker at the conference. The title of Shelby’s presentation was, “Drag Racers Daughter: The Quarter-Mile that led me to Engineering”. She co-hosted this presentation with Paula McDonald, Engineering Specialist in Materials & Processes at Aerojet Rocketdyne. Shelby and Paula’s fathers and grandfathers have drag raced together for the past 30+ years. WELocal Phoenix also occurred during the same time as the NHRA Arizona Nationals; both held in Phoenix, Arizona. Shelby was able to also attend the NHRA Arizona Nationals; where she was able to meet with Jason Line, Pro Stock Driver, and Jeff Diehl, Nitro Funny Car Driver, to display Society of Women Engineers decals on their race cars for the weekend. Fox Sports 1 was able to cover the SWE decals on their race cars during the filming of the event. Of which contributed to a significant amount of exposure for this amazing organization. Shelby is a fourth year Sustainable Manufacturing student, minoring in Business Administration, with a graduation date of May 2019. She will return to Southern Indiana this May as a Manufacturing Engineering Intern at Cummins Inc. On Saturday, January 13th, 2018 our Section President, who is also our Region A Collegiate Senator, Shelby Freese attended the Region A Winter Event. The Region A Winter Event was a tour of the Rosie the Riveter WWII Home front Museum, and with a special guest speaker, Betty Reid Soskin. Shelby was able to gain a better understanding of the City of Richmond's involvement in war efforts, and the influence of Henry Kaiser over not only Richmond, but the world. Shelby had a great time and is not only looking forward to the spring event, but for more girls from our section to attend the spring event as well. The Spring Event is TBD. author: Shelby Freese Several officers from Chico State’s SWE organization received the exciting opportunity to travel to Austin, Texas, for 3 days to participate in WE17, the nation’s largest conference and career fair for women in engineering (held at the Austin Convention Center). Many students walked away with internships, interviews, and lots of words of wisdom from industry professionals that will always stick with them. When WE17 claims it’s the largest national conference and career fair, it’s not exaggerating. All of the officers agreed that the capacity of people was shocking! According to SWE’s Treasurer, Beatrice Ju, there were about 13000 people just in the Austin Convention Center alone. The event was actually expanded from the allotted capacity of the previous year, and still completely sold out the week before the conference started. There were about 350 companies at the career fair, as well as many companies giving different conference speeches and discussions. SWE Event Coordinator, Spenser Knudson, said that she enjoyed attending a discussion conference with Apple employees who shared some technical aspects of their job, their transitions between college and the workforce, and their personal experiences. Other talks Chico State officers got to participate in included “How to Shine at Work” and a cyber security conference with Rockwell Automation. Besides the enormous career fair, panels, discussions, and interviews, officers of Chico State SWE also spent time together trying local cuisine and exploring Austin. As explained by SWE’s PR officer, Melissa Renteria-Santana, “I was exhausted after the weekend but learned so much and feel way more prepared to approach future companies and career fairs. I truly hope all our members get to experience [such] a conference.” Overall, the fast-paced weekend was full of great surprises, inspiring discussion panels, and an unbeatable career fair that left the officers with memories that will last a lifetime.
